Report: Seattle Mariners trade veteran pitcher in Triple-A to Cubs

Posted on April 22, 2025

The Seattle Mariners have reportedly made a minor trade that could have an impact for another MLB club.

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mariners are sending veteran pitcher Drew Pomeranz to the Chicago Cubs. The 36-year-old Pomeranz is a one-time All-Star who has been with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers this season.

The return for the Mariners in the deal has not been reported.

Pomeranz hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2021 with the San Diego Padres, but he has been effective in relief for the Rainiers. Though the veteran southpaw has a 4.66 ERA, he has not allowed an earned run in seven of his nine appearances in 2025.

The Mariners signed Pomeranz to a minor league deal last December, and he spent spring training with the team. He was released by Seattle near the end of spring training in March and returned on another minor league deal four days later.

According to Rosenthal, Pomeranz’s contract includes an upward mobility clause, requiring Seattle to either promote him from Triple-A or trade him in the case of another MLB team being willing to offer him a major league roster spot.

The Cubs have a need for left-handed pitching after starter Justin Steele, a 2023 All-Star, suffered a season-ending UCL injury.

The Mariners also gave the Cubs bullpen help in 2024 when Seattle sent reliever Tyson Miller to Chicago for minor league infielder Jake Slaughter. Miller went on to have a strong season with the Cubs, posting a 2.15 ERA in 49 appearances out of the Chicago ‘pen.

Seattle has regularly shuffled its own bullpen early on this season, but Pomeranz has not figured into those roster moves.

The Mariners will open the last series of their current road trip at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 2:30 with the pregame show.
