The Chicago Cubs have gotten off to a solid start to begin the 2025 MLB season. Craig Counsell and company hold a 14-10 record through their first 24 games.
With that record, the Cubs are leading the early-season race in the NL Central division. There is a lot of season to play, but Chicago looks like a potential playoff contender. One issue that has become clear is that they have needed more pitching.
To help fix that issue, the Cubs have made a trade. They acquired Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners. Pomeranz, a former No. 5 overall pick back in the 2010 amateur draft, will look to resurrect his career in Chicago. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the news of the Cubs acquiring Pomeranz.
In addition to reporting the news of the trade, Rosenthal revealed details about how the trade came together.
Pomeranz had upward mobility clause. Mariners needed to offer him to every other club. If a team was willing to bring him to the majors, they either had to promote him or trade him there. Pitched for Craig Counsell in Milwaukee in 2019.
Pomeranz last pitched in the Major Leagues back in 2021 with the San Diego Padres. He appeared in 27 games, all in relief, during that season, compiling a 1-0 record to go along with a 1.75 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, a 3.0 K/BB ratio, and 13 holds.
This is well worth the gamble for Chicago. Perhaps he can be part of the solution to the early-season struggles the Cubs’ pitching staff have had.
Next up for Chicago will be a a quick two-game series at Wrigley Field against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It will be the third series against the Dodgers already this season, with Los Angeles leading the season series 3-2 so far.
