The Kansas City Chiefs‘ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl highlighted a glaring need that Andy Reid and Co. had managed to hide for most of the season.
The Chiefs’ offensive line was reshuffled with poor play at left tackle meaning star guard Joe Thuney was kicked out to tackle, and the line simply wasn’t the same.
With Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia not able to hold down the position, fixing the left tackle position is now one of the Chiefs’ biggest needs this offseason.
And ESPN has doubled down on that.
“The Chiefs will be looking to fix their offensive line, particularly to find a player who can be a dependable left tackle. Kansas City has gone through several players since releasing longtime left tackle Eric Fisher after the 2020 season,” ESPN writes. “The Chiefs tried two young players, Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris, at left tackle in 2024 but each played so poorly they were subsequently benched. The team tried veteran D.J. Humphries, but he wasn’t the answer.”
So, do the Chiefs look to address the position in free agency? That seems like the way to go as a veteran is needed, and with the likes of Cam Robinson, Dan Moore Jr., Alaric Jackson and Ronnie Stanley the main targets, there are a host of options that general manager Brett Veach could go with.
The draft hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Chiefs along the offensive line, so free agency is the way to go if Reid wants a dependable veteran for Suamataia and Morris to learn from.
Either way, the Chiefs must do something to fortify the line, and we haven’t even spoken about impending free agent Trey Smith yet and if he moves on. So while the receiver position and defensive line are also needed, getting Patrick Mahomes’ protection fixed should be job No. 1.
