The relationship between a head coach and quarterback is vital. So much so that we’ve seen NFL head coaches get fired because they couldn’t figure it out with a star quarterback. On the flip side, we’ve also seen quarterbacks fail with one head coach and then go to another franchise and succeed.
Think of the riff between Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy with the Packers in the later years as an example of the first idea. For the second, the best recent example would be Sam Darnold, who looked like a flameout before he connected with Kevin O’Connell and the Minnesota Vikings.
It’s a tried-and-true connection, which makes it unsurprising to hear that recently signed New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson made sure to do his homework on head coach Brian Daboll before signing on the dotted line. Again, on the flip side, Daboll did his homework as well, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post.
Wilson is a former Super Bowl winner and 10-time Pro Bowler, but he’s far from the elite quarterback he once was. Daboll, on the other hand, has gone 18-32-1 in his three seasons with the Giants.
Both sides are likely wise to be skeptical of the other, though it does seem that ultimately both parties felt like this could be a match that will work.
And if not, there’s also Jameis Winston, who also recently signed with the Giants. Also, don’t count out the team drafting another quarterback at No. 3 overall in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
One way or another, the Giants are trying to find some kind of combination that will work between quarterback and head coach
