Zach Pressnell of Newsweek proposed a trade idea that could address that need, suggesting the Cubs target Reds right-hander Nick Martinez. In the hypothetical deal, Chicago would send outfield prospect Kevin Alcántara, reliever Fernando Cruz, and pitching prospect Jack Neely to Cincinnati in return.
While Martinez has had a rocky start to the season — posting a 6.06 ERA in 16 1/3 innings — he’s transitioning into a full-time starting role after spending much of his career in the bullpen. The Reds have an abundance of pitching talent, with names like Andrew Abbott, Carson Spiers, and top prospect Rhett Lowder waiting in the wings, making a trade feasible if the Cubs are motivated enough.
