Chicago Cubs starting pitcher makes season declaration after loss to Diamondbacks

Posted on April 24, 2025

The Chicago Cubs completed their Easter weekend with a 3-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks after 11 innings of baseball played in front of 29,062 fans at Wrigley Field on Sunday.

The Cubs’ bats couldn’t match their power from the first two games of the series, when they defeated Arizona 13-11 on Friday and 6-2 on Saturday.

Still, the Cubs are in good shape after the loss on Easter Sunday.

Chicago has a 14-10 record and a one-game lead on the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have an off day on Monday before they host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

Following the game on Sunday, Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon said he was encouraged by what he saw from the offense against three good Diamondbacks pitchers (despite the team losing after he gave up just one earned run in five innings pitched).

Taillon declared the team could play with anybody.

“Look at the schedule, it’s like, ‘Oh, coming up, you know we have Corbin Burns, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly,’” Taillon said of the team’s challenges headed into their series against Arizona via video provided by Marquee Sports Network. “Like those are three really dang good MLB starting pitchers, and we come out of here still with a series win.

“So yeah, I mean we faced great arms, great lineups, and just I think we can play with anybody. So, just a good reminder.”

The Cubs have played well to start the year with a challenging schedule in March and April.

Chicago should be in good shape to extend their lead in the NL Central in May when they play series against the Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, and Colorado Rockies
