Chicago Bears legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve McMichael has passed away

The chicago bears icon and 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Steve “Mongo” McMichael has passed away following a courageous three-year battle with ALS. The legendary defensive tackle was put in hospice care on early Wednesday afternoon before passing away on Wednesday night.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the unfortunate news in a post on X, including a statement from Jarrett Payton.

“Bears legend Steve “Mongo” McMichael passed away today after a long battle with ALS, family friend Jarrett Payton announced. Payton wrote: “With deep sorrow, I share that Steve McMichael passed at 5:28 PM after a brave fight with #ALS, surrounded by loved ones. I’m grateful to have been with him in his final moments. Please keep Steve and his family your prayers. #Bears”. “

The legendary member of the 1985 Bears and a key member of the 46 defense, Mongo, was a two-time first-team All-Pro and was in the Pro Bowl two times. In his 15-year NFL career, Mongo had 95 sacks and 9045 tackles. McMichael finally took his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024 as he was introduced by Jarrett Payton the son of Walter Payton.

The Bears held a special ceremony at halftime of a game in 2024 to honor McMichael. The legendary defensive tackle was beloved in Chicago as part of that vaunted defense and even had stints in professional wrestling as well as a career in music.
