Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer recently shared his thoughts on star outfielder Kyle Tucker’s future with the team during an appearance on 670 The Score’s Score Middays. Tucker, widely regarded as the top talent in the upcoming 2026 free agent class, is having an exceptional 2025 season, batting .314 with seven home runs and more walks than strikeouts.
Hoyer emphasized the Cubs’ strong desire to keep Tucker in Chicago long-term but admitted that in-season negotiations can be challenging. “We’d love to keep Kyle long-term—who wouldn’t want a player like that?” Hoyer said, adding that any ongoing talks would remain private.
When asked if the team might persuade Tucker to forgo free agency, Hoyer pointed to Wrigley Field’s unique appeal. “My hope is that Wrigley and Chicago become special to him, and he sees there’s no better place to play,” he explained. Hoyer also acknowledged the fierce competition for Tucker’s services and said he maintains a strong relationship with Tucker’s representatives.
Though an extension is still on the table, Tucker could opt to test free agency this offseason, where he’s expected to draw interest from across the league.
