Phillies put up crooked number against former top prospect in win versus Cubs

Posted on April 27, 2025

The Phillies (14-13) snapped their offensive cold streak with a six-run fourth inning in a 10-4 win against the Chicago Cubs (17-11) at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon.

Philadelphia in the fourth had the bases loaded with nobody out on three separate occasions. The trio at the bottom of the lineup, Max Kepler, Alec Bohm and Johan Rojas, all drove in a run on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly. Bryson Stott recorded the Phillies’ fourth-consecutive RBI with a single, and Bryce Harper plated two with a double to left-center field.

The six runs in the fourth tied a season-high in runs scored in a single inning. All six runs came against former Phillies pitching prospect Ben Brown, who was dealt to the Cubs at the 2022 deadline for reliever David Robertson.

The Phillies added on three more in the sixth. Kyle Schwarber, who extended his on-base streak to 33 games, drove in two on a double. It’s only the second time in the last 16 games Schwarber has driven in multiple runs in a game.

A solo home run from Kepler to right field made it 10-2. It was the first Phillies home run since Bryson Stott’s three-run home run in the ninth inning of Monday’s loss against the Mets.

Starter Jesús Luzardo carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth with two outs. He allowed two runs on a single by Seiya Suzuki with the bases loaded in that same inning. A crucial fielding error by Trea Turner extended the inning, leading to Luzardo losing the no-hitter, allowing two runs and throwing 19 additional pitches. Both runs were unearned.

Luzardo (3-0, 1.73 ERA) threw over 100 pitches for the first time this year. He went six innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out five batters.

The Phillies will try to win their first road series in a month tomorrow on Sunday Night Baseball. Aaron Nola (0-5, 6.43 ERA) gets another chance to bounce back. He will be opposed by right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon (1-1, 4.73 ERA).
