Chicago Cubs Make Intriguing Pitching Move Before Sunday’s Phillies Matchup

Posted on April 28, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have been needing help on the pitching front all season long. In order to try to fix the issue, they have been signing and trading for veteran pieces and giving them chances to become a key part of the bullpen. On Sunday, heading into the Cubs’ series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team has made another intriguing pitching move.

According to a report from Jacob Zanolla of Cubs Insider, Chicago has called up veteran left-handed relief pitcher Tom Cosgrove. “Sources have informed CI that the Cubs are promoting reliever Tom Cosgrove, giving their bullpen a fresh arm as they look to win the series against the Phillies,” he wrote. “Cosgrove was acquired earlier in April from the Padres, a deal that gave the Cubs more depth for their bullpen.”

Cosgrove pitched in 18 games during the 2024 MLB season with the San Diego Padres. He compiled an 0-1 record to go along with an 11.66 ERA, a 1.98 WHIP, a 2.5 K/BB ratio, and 14 and 1/3 innings pitched.

Back in 2023, he performed much better. During the 2023 season, also with the Padres, he appeared in 54 games in a relief role. He had a 1-2 record with a 1.75 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, a 2.3 K/BB ratio, and 51 and 1/3 innings completed.

At 28 years old, Cosgrove will now look to get back on track with a Cubs team that needs more bullpen help. They have also needed a left-hander in particular. Chicago will go for the series win over the Phillies with first pitch being scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
