The New York Jets added offensive weapon Mason Taylor in the draft, with a starting role more than within his grasp.
Opportunity has knocked on Mason Taylor’s door with the New York Jets selecting him in the second round of the NFL Draft.
Given the lack of receivers and tight ends on the roster, it made sense for New York to entertain the idea and then draft a couple of weapons for Justin Fields.
Taylor, a tight end who has Hall of Famer bloodlines with his father Jason, a star with the Miami Dolphins, now takes his talents to the AFC East.
And given the state of the tight end room in Tanner Engstrand’s offense, Mason will likely usurp Jeremy Ruckert as the starter. And that makes Taylor’s selection the most interesting one for CBS Sports.
“Taylor, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame pass rusher Jason Taylor, has a fascinating opportunity in front of him,” CBS Sports writes. “He’s one of the youngest prospects in this draft and is a big target for quarterbacks. He’ll help fill the shoes of Tyler Conklin, who left in free agency. Conklin averaged 82 targets over the last three years, which are now up for grabs for Taylor.”
CBS is right, Tyler Conklin was a consistent outlet in the passing game in New York, and now a big spot and opportunity have opened up. All players want when coming into the NFL is a chance, and the door of opportunity has swung wide open for Mason.
A good pass-catcher and solid run-blocker, the 6-5 Taylor will look to work on his craft in the offseason to work his way up to what many hope will be a starting gig in Week 1.
He is ready to get to work and show the NFL world that he can be a useful option for Justin Fields. He stated that he wants to be the “ultimate tight end” for his quarterback, which is a high bar.
But with Hall of Fame bloodlines, it might be one Mason can reach.
