Horrifying incident overshadows Cubs’ loss as fan falls from the stands during game

Posted on May 2, 2025

A 4-3 Chicago Cubs’ loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates seems quite insignificant tonight after a fan fell more than 20 feet from top of the Roberto Clemente Wall in right field, landing on the warning track and halting play in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh paramedics, as well as members of both the Cubs and Pirates medical staffs, immediately responded to the incident. The Pirates released a statement after the game, stating that the male fan had been transported to nearby Allegheny General Hospital, but did not release any details regarding his condition.

Andrew McCutchen had just hit a bouncing ball to the shortstop side of second that ricocheted off both Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner, rolling into shallow right field and scoring both the tying and go-ahead runs – in what proved to be the game-winning hit for Pittsburgh.

Folks quickly flooded social media with videos of the incident – and if you’ve seen them, you understand why it was quickly clear this was serious. It appeared as if the fan tried to jump onto the field, but wound up losing his footing and/or balance, dropping onto the field below.

Both teams quickly realized something had transpired during the play and action was halted as the fan received treatment and was taken away on a stretcher. Stay tuned for more updates.
