Several Top 2024 Patriots Draft Picks Now Facing Uncertain Futures

Posted on May 3, 2025

The New England Patriots found their future quarterback in Drake Maye during the 2024 NFL Draft. However, a number of other notable picks from that draft class are now facing uncertain futures following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker are among those with unclear roles heading into next season. Both are currently projected to be lower on the depth chart behind Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Kendrick Bourne.

In terms of production, Polk (the 37th overall pick) recorded just 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns across 15 games. Baker (selected 110th overall) added only a single reception. For comparison, 22 rookie receivers topped 20 catches last season, and Broncos seventh-rounder Devaughn Vele outgained both Polk and Baker with 475 receiving yards.

Even though the Patriots only drafted one wide receiver in 2025—Kyle Williams in the third round—Polk and Baker still face a difficult path to meaningful playing time. Even if they do see the field, they are expected to be well down the target hierarchy.

Financially, Polk’s contract carries a $2.2 million cap hit in 2025, escalating to $2.644 million in 2026 and $3.084 million in 2027, according to Spotrac.

Beyond the wide receivers, other members of the 2024 draft class are also struggling to secure key roles. Offensive lineman Caedan Wallace, who was picked 68th overall, is currently listed fourth on the depth chart at tackle, behind Will Campbell, Morgan Moses, and Vederian Lowe.

With Mike Vrabel now leading the Patriots, players drafted under the previous regime—aside from Maye—will need to make a strong impression during training camp to earn early-season playing time. While Polk is expected to remain on the roster, Baker’s spot could be in jeopardy as roster cuts approach in September.
