Raiders Draft QB Tommy Mellott with the 213th Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft

Posted on May 4, 2025

In a surprising move during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders used their second of three picks in the sixth round to select quarterback Tommy Mellott from Montana State. The 213th overall pick could prove to be a key addition to the Raiders’ roster as they look to bolster their quarterback depth with a versatile and dynamic talent.

Mellott, a standout at the FCS level, had an impressive 2024 season that earned him the prestigious Walter Payton Award, which is given annually to the top offensive player in all of FCS football. As one of the most electrifying players in the FCS, Mellott set himself apart with his playmaking ability, leading Montana State to success both through the air and on the ground. He passed for 2,138 yards in the 2024 season, boasting a remarkable 22:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio—a testament to his poise and precision as a passer.

While Mellott’s success at quarterback is undeniable, his future at the NFL level may not be confined to just one position. During his Pro Day, Mellott also worked out as a receiver, showcasing his adaptability and willingness to embrace new roles. This dual-threat potential gives the Raiders a lot of flexibility, as they could utilize him in a variety of ways, depending on how his transition to the NFL unfolds.

The Raiders are no strangers to taking chances on players from the FCS, with Mellott being the second FCS prospect they’ve drafted this year. By selecting him, they’re clearly betting on his high upside, versatility, and ability to develop into a key contributor. With his combination of athleticism, leadership, and football IQ, Mellott could be an intriguing piece for the Raiders’ offense in the coming years, whether as a quarterback or perhaps in a new role as a receiver.

As the Raiders continue to rebuild their roster, this pick could provide a hidden gem for the future. Keep an eye on Mellott as he makes his transition to the next level—he may have more than one trick up his sleeve
