In a move that is sending shockwaves across the NFL and electrifying fans across the nation, the Halas-McCaskey family has made an announcement that reshapes the very identity of the Chicago Bears franchise. Mike Singletary — Hall of Famer, Super Bowl champion, and the heart of the iconic 1985 Bears defense — is officially returning to the organization as a co-owner.

The announcement came during an emotional press conference held this morning at Soldier Field, where Virginia McCaskey’s grandson and team chairman George McCaskey stood alongside Singletary to confirm what fans have long dreamed of: the return of “Samurai Mike,” not as a coach or ambassador, but as part of the Bears’ ownership group.

“This is more than symbolic,” George McCaskey said. “Mike Singletary has always been a foundational figure in this franchise — and now he’s a foundational figure in shaping its future.”

A Full-Circle Moment

Singletary, 66, played all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears (1981–1992), earning 10 Pro Bowl selections, 2 NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, and a Super Bowl ring. Known for his steely eyes, unparalleled leadership, and ferocious tackling, he became a living embodiment of Bears football: physical, principled, and passionate.

But today’s news marked something deeper than nostalgia. With this ownership stake, Singletary becomes one of the few Black minority owners in NFL history — a meaningful step forward in a league still grappling with representation and equity at its highest levels.

“This is not just a homecoming,” Singletary said, his voice thick with emotion. “This is a calling. I love this team, this city, and everything it stands for. I’m here not just to represent the past, but to help build the future — one rooted in excellence, unity, and championship standards.”

The Deal Behind the Scenes

While details of the ownership structure remain confidential, league sources confirmed that Singletary acquired a minority stake in the franchise through a private arrangement negotiated over the past six months. The Bears have long remained under full control of the Halas-McCaskey family, but this marks the first time in decades that equity has been extended to a former player.

Insiders say Singletary’s return is part of a broader organizational shift toward modernization, transparency, and a renewed emphasis on championship culture. And it comes at a time when Chicago is entering a new era, led by rookie QB Caleb Williams, new head coach Ben Johnson, and a front office energized by young leadership and historic opportunity.

“Mike Singletary doesn’t do anything halfway,” said General Manager Ryan Poles. “He’s not here for ceremonial ribbon-cuttings. He’s here to win — and to help us return to the standard he helped set decades ago.”
