Alex Cora Offers Insight Into Red Sox’s Plan At First Base

Posted on May 9, 2025

The Red Sox still are figuring things out at first base, but we now know one perceived option is off the table.

Following Boston’s shutout win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday, Rafael Devers made it very clear that he wasn’t interested in becoming Triston Casas’ replacement. Devers has already made one position change this season, and although a shift to first arguably would make the Red Sox a better team, the three-time All-Star is committed to sticking as the designated hitter.

So, what will Boston do if it loses faith in the Romy González-Abraham Toro platoon? Alex Cora provided insight after the Red Sox earned their second straight victory.

“We’ve got some capable guys in Triple A that can play the position,” Cora told reporters, per The Boston Globe. “We’ll just go to the next guy. That’s the way it works.”

It’s unclear who would be the first to receive a call from the Red Sox if they tapped into their farm system for first base help. Roman Anthony is not expected to be in the equation, as Boston brass is not keen on dramatically adjusting the development plan for the organization’s top prospect.

But for now, the Red Sox will work with who they have on their active roster. González is expected to return from his brief injury absence this weekend when Boston visits Kansas City for a three-game set.
