He is saying all the right things publicly, but behind the scenes, the Boston Red Sox may have a serious issue brewing.
Early in spring training, He made it clear he wouldn’t move off third base for Alex Bregman, a stronger defender, and had no interest in switching to first base or designated hitter. However, he recently stated he’s now open to being the DH and informed Red Sox leadership of his willingness in a private meeting.
Despite this, MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported that Devers was frustrated enough with the situation to consider requesting a trade. McAdam noted that Devers felt misled by the Red Sox regarding offseason rumors involving Bregman and Nolan Arenado and still harbors resentment.
“Behind closed doors, (Devers) lets the Red Sox know, in no uncertain terms, that he’s still feeling aggrieved and disrespected,” McAdam wrote, while Devers continues to present a cooperative front in public.
Though Devers’ spring training debut was delayed due to shoulder issues, some speculate his frustration with the team may have played a role. He is now expected to be ready for Opening Day, but whether this drama is truly behind him and the Red Sox remains to be seen.
