The Boston Red Sox have had a turbulent offseason, making several key acquisitions, including starting pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler. They also bolstered their infield by signing superstar Alex Bregman. However, given a series of injuries to their rotation, the additions of Crochet and Buehler may prove to be the most crucial.
With Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito all sidelined to start the season, Boston may need to explore the trade market for another starting pitcher.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently proposed a blockbuster trade that would send Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara to the Red Sox in exchange for right fielder Wilyer Abreu and shortstop Franklin Arias, Boston’s No. 4 prospect.
Rymer noted that Boston’s pitching depth is already being tested with injuries, and Crochet and Buehler come with durability concerns. He also pointed out that the Red Sox have an excess of young hitters, which could appeal to Miami.
While Boston seems like a strong fit for Alcántara, this proposed trade might not be enough to land him. As a Cy Young-caliber pitcher with three years of team-friendly control, the Marlins would likely demand additional high-level prospects, particularly a pitching prospect, to make the deal happen.
