Just In: Los Angeles Rams to say goodbye with $84 million star earlier than anticipated

Posted on May 12, 2025

The Los Angeles Rams have remained competitive throughout Sean McVay’s eight seasons as head coach, and they appear ready to challenge for the NFC West title and make another strong postseason push in 2025.

However, the organization is clearly beginning to plan for what’s next. This offseason, nothing highlighted that more than the team’s openness to allowing quarterback to explore trade opportunities.

Stafford, the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, is heading into his 17th NFL season at age 37. After weighing his options and finding limited interest, he signed a contract extension with the Rams and is now under a two-year, $84 million deal through 2026.

Still, there is speculation that 2025 could be Stafford’s final season

Matthew Stafford is back again, but there’s a strong possibility he retires after this year,” wrote Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report on May 9. “The Rams may also opt to part ways if they no longer see the upside in keeping a costly veteran who has posted a 91.8 passer rating since 2022.”

Gagnon suggested that whether by retirement or release, Los Angeles will likely be searching for a new starting quarterback next offseason—if not sooner.

Still, there is speculation that 2025 could be Stafford’s final season.

Is Matthew Stafford a Hall of Famer right now?

Currently, the only other quarterbacks on the Rams’ roster are 33-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo and former Georgia standout Stetson Bennett, according to ESPN.
