Tuesday wasn’t the best day for the Red Sox in terms of injuries, but it could have been far worse.
Before Boston’s exhibition game against the Phillies, Alex Cora announced that Rafael Devers’ spring training debut would be delayed until Saturday.
Soon after, Trevor Story was scratched from the lineup due to mild upper-back tightness, and Lucas Giolito exited after just one inning with a hamstring issue.
Giolito downplayed his injury, calling it “very minor” and an “annoying little setback.” Meanwhile, Cora reassured Red Sox fans about Story’s condition.
“He’s doing OK,” Cora told reporters, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “He’s just tight. He was taking grounders today, felt it a little bit. He should play tomorrow (Wednesday).”
While Boston hopes for a healthy roster overall, they may be especially cautious with Story. The two-time All-Star, who signed a six-year deal in 2022, has been limited to just 69 games over the past two seasons due to injuries.

When healthy, Story is a key contributor, both at the plate and in the field. If he can stay on the field this season, his presence could significantly boost the Red Sox’s playoff chances.
