MAJOR-BREAKING: “He’s Coming for a Spot: Bruins Prospect Earns Shocking Praise After Playoff Run”

Posted on May 16, 2025

When the final buzzer sounded Sunday in Charlotte, the Providence Bruins’ 2024-25 campaign came to an end with a 5-2 loss to the Checkers in the second round of the AHL playoffs. While the early exit stung, the postseason provided valuable experience for many of the organization’s younger players—especially after the Boston Bruins missed the NHL playoffs entirely. For prospects like Matthew Poitras, these extra games were critical for development.

Poitras, a 2022 second-round pick, had a back-and-forth season. After starting the year in Boston, he was reassigned to Providence under former head coach Jim Montgomery, then recalled, and later sent back down. Each time, he showed growth. His play in the AHL postseason stood out, not just for his two goals and two assists in eight games, but for his overall impact and poise on the ice.

Providence head coach Ryan Mougenel praised Poitras following the team’s elimination, pointing out how the young forward elevated his game during the playoff run. “He stepped up in the playoffs, which is an important part of it,” Mougenel said. “It was telling for a lot of guys… it’s encouraging that he played like a man.”

Poitras’ development throughout the season has positioned him as a player Boston needs to rely on next year. Whether he’s centering a line or playing on the wing, his ability to contribute consistently will be vital under the team’s new head coach.

While Providence’s playoff run ended sooner than hoped, Poitras may have turned a major corner in his young career. His growth, maturity, and playoff performance suggest he’s ready to take the next step and become a regular NHL contributor for the Bruins
