As Cactus League action approaches, the Chicago Cubs are making some last-minute roster moves. The team has signed right-handed pitcher to a minor league deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
This marks the fifth stop in his seven-year career, during which he has alternated between starting and bullpen roles. Originally drafted by the New York Mets in 2012, he pitched in 27 games for them from 2017 to 2019, primarily as a reliever.
He spent over two seasons with the Seattle Mariners, highlighted by a strong 2021 campaign in which he posted a 3.61 ERA across 31 starts. In 2023, he made 12 starts for the Colorado Rockies, struggling with the challenges of Coors Field, as evidenced by his 6.27 ERA and 14 home runs allowed in 60 innings.
Most recently, he pitched for the Chicago White Sox, making 33 appearances (30 starts) in 2024. Despite a 3-15 record, he logged 160 innings with a 4.80 FIP, making it his best season since 2021.
While his numbers may not stand out, Chris Flexen’s durability is a key asset—he has had only three stints on the injured list throughout his career. Given the importance of pitching depth, the Cubs saw value in bringing him aboard.
Chicago’s rotation is led by free-agent addition Matt Boyd, along with Shota Imanaga, Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Javier Assad. The bullpen features new closer Ryan Pressly, trade acquisition Ryan Brasier from the Dodgers, and Colin Rea, who signed in January.
The 30-year-old Flexen is expected to see action in spring training and could be called upon at the Major League level if injuries create an opportunity in 2025.
