Steelers’ Looming Decision on Justin Fields, Russell Wilson Gets Major Update

Posted on May 17, 2025

Following a solid 10-3 beginning to the 2024 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers dropped their last four games of the regular season and were knocked out by the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild-Card playoff round.

The Steelers maintained two proficient quarterbacks on the roster during the year, each of whom signed one-year contracts with the team last offseason. Justin Fields began the initial six games for Pittsburgh while Russell Wilson was out with an injury, achieving a 4-2 record.

Wilson played his first game for the Steelers in Week 7 versus the New York Jets. He guided his team to six victories in their initial seven matches prior to the late-season downturn.

With NFL free agency approaching, the Steelers will probably only manage to retain one of Fields or Wilson, and it seems they are favoring one option.

On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport from NFL Network appeared on “The Insiders” to talk about the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh. He went on to disclose that Pittsburgh will probably choose Fields instead of Wilson in 2025.

“It appears that the Steelers are likely moving towards signing one of these quarterbacks,” Rapoport stated. “That was the strategy.” The most probable choice for starting quarterback came from within their own locker room.

From what I understand based on the sources I’ve consulted, it seems more probable that Justin Fields will be the next quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of Russell Wilson.

Although he participated in just 10 games and began in six, Fields demonstrated the finest version of his NFL abilities throughout the 2024 season. The ex-Chicago Bears quarterback connected on 106 of 161 passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, while also rushing for 289 yards and five more touchdowns.

Wilson, conversely, continued to play adequately to secure a position in the Pro Bowl as an alternate. He concluded his year with Pittsburgh amassing 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdown throws, and five interceptions.

Fields has demonstrated his ability to maintain a team’s competitiveness. At 26, he provides the Steelers a long-term choice at quarterback, while the 36-year-old Wilson is approaching the end of his career.
