Bears Flashback Tribute: Remembering Steve “Mongo” McMichael — A True Warrior Battling ALS with the Heart of a Champion

Posted on May 18, 2025

Chicago, IL — As the NFL world continues to rally around former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Steve McMichael, a touching flashback post has resurfaced — reminding fans not just of his dominant presence on the field, but of the relentless spirit that defined his legendary career.

The photo, taken during the iconic 1985 Bears Super Bowl season, shows McMichael alongside defensive greats Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, and Otis Wilson — a unit that once struck fear into every offense they faced. But this post isn’t just about the glory days. It’s a tribute. A message. A show of love for a man who’s now in the toughest fight of his life.

Now 66, McMichael — affectionately known as “Mongo” — is courageously battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a condition that has taken its toll physically but hasn’t dimmed his spirit. Fans, former teammates, and the entire Bears family have poured in support for one of the grittiest, most determined players to ever wear the navy and orange.

“This is for you, Steve,” the tribute reads. “I remember you as a player who never gave less than 100%. You gave everything for Chicago. Now, we’re with you in this fight.”

McMichael’s legacy isn’t just about sacks and stats — it’s about heart, leadership, and a no-quit attitude that inspired a city and continues to do so. As the Bears community reflects on his career and his courage, one thing is clear: Steve McMichael will always be a Bear — and always a fighter.
