Chicago Cubs Manager Makes Bold Decision on Game 2 Starter in Tokyo

Posted on May 19, 2025

Just hours after the Cubs claimed a thrilling extra-inning victory in Game 1 of their Japan Series showdown, manager Craig Counsell dropped a bombshell that has the baseball world talking — rookie phenom Ben Sauls will take the mound as the Game 2 starter against the San Francisco Giants.

That’s right. The 23-year-old lefty, who dazzled in Spring Training and earned a last-minute call-up for the international trip, is getting the nod on one of the biggest stages the Cubs have played on in years.

“We’ve watched Ben grow into a competitor beyond his years,” Counsell said during a packed postgame press conference. “He’s earned this moment, and I think he’s going to thrive under the Tokyo Dome lights.”

A Surprise Call – Or a Genius Move?

Cubs fans weren’t expecting this — not with veteran Jameson Taillon and the hard-throwing Jordan Wicks both available. But Counsell is going with his gut and rolling the dice on Sauls’ deceptive changeup and fearless mound presence.

And honestly? It’s hard not to love the move.

Sauls was nearly untouchable in Arizona this spring, posting a 1.84 ERA and striking out 22 over 14.2 innings. He brings a poise that belies his experience, and sources inside the Cubs’ clubhouse say he’s been laser-focused ever since the plane touched down in Japan.

“He’s been a sponge,” catcher Yan Gomes said. “Asking questions, studying hitters, ready to go. This kid isn’t just here to enjoy the ride — he wants the ball.”

A Star Is Born in the East?

If Sauls delivers in Game 2, it could signal the official arrival of the Cubs’ next big thing — and cement Counsell’s rep as a manager who’s not afraid to trust youth when it matters most.

Game 2 is shaping up to be a must-watch. Not just for the Cubs’ shot at sweeping the mini-series in Tokyo, but to see if a new star can rise on the international stage.

First pitch is set for 6:35 PM local time (4:35 AM CT). Set those alarms, Chicago — because baseball history might just be waking you up.
