New weapon in the Cubs’ bullpen: Left-handed reliever joins straight from the Mets on a Major League contract!

Posted on May 29, 2025

The Chicago Cubs signed left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera on Tuesday night after he cleared waivers and chose free agency following his release by the New York Mets, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

Cabrera had made six appearances for the Mets this season, recording a 3.52 ERA and allowing just one home run.

He returns to the National League Central — a familiar division — having spent four and a half seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023.

Cabrera initially showed potential in St. Louis but saw his performance dip in 2022 and 2023, posting ERAs of 4.63 and 5.06, respectively, which led to his trade.

After a brief resurgence in Toronto with a 2.66 ERA in late 2023, his numbers regressed again this season to a 3.59 ERA before signing with the Mets.

He started the year in Triple-A but was called up to the majors due to injuries and pitched well in limited outings before being waived. Now with the Cubs — whose bullpen has been a major weakness this season — Cabrera adds veteran depth.

While it’s unclear whether he’ll start in the minors or go straight to the big-league roster, his experience offers potential value to Chicago’s struggling relief corps.
