Cubs Complete Dominant Sweep Over Rockies Behind Suzuki’s Clutch Double, PCA’s 15th Homer, and Boyd’s Masterclass on the Mound

Chicago, IL — The Chicago Cubs wrapped up a commanding three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a statement win on Thursday afternoon, fueled by early offense and a dominant performance from the pitching staff. A first-inning RBI double by Seiya Suzuki, a milestone 15th home run by Pete Crow-Armstrong, and eight strikeouts from veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd were the headline performances in a 5-2 victory that showcased the Cubs’ growing confidence and depth.

The Cubs wasted no time getting on the board. In the bottom of the first inning, after Nico Hoerner reached base, Suzuki laced a double into the left-center gap, scoring the game’s first run and setting the tone for Chicago’s aggressive approach at the plate.

The offensive spark didn’t stop there. In the third inning, Pete Crow-Armstrong, who continues to impress in his rookie campaign, launched a solo home run deep into the Wrigley Field bleachers — his 15th of the season. The crowd erupted as PCA rounded the bases, further cementing his status as one of the league’s most exciting young stars.

On the mound, Matthew Boyd delivered one of his sharpest performances in a Cubs uniform. The lefty scattered just five hits over six strong innings and struck out eight Rockies hitters, keeping Colorado off-balance with a mix of well-located fastballs and deceptive off-speed pitches. Boyd’s ability to pitch out of a couple of early jams helped preserve the Cubs’ lead and gave the bullpen a manageable workload.

Manager Craig Counsell praised Boyd’s poise: “Matt set the tone with his execution. He got ahead in counts, trusted his stuff, and gave us exactly what we needed.”

The bullpen, anchored by Julian Merryweather and closer Adbert Alzolay, shut the door in the final three innings. Alzolay earned his 14th save of the season with a clean ninth, sealing the sweep and sending Cubs fans home happy.

The sweep not only adds momentum to the Cubs’ playoff hopes but also reinforces the effectiveness of their blend of veteran experience and emerging young talent. With the offense clicking and the rotation showing consistency, the Cubs are beginning to look like a dangerous contender in the NL Central.

Chicago now heads into the weekend series with renewed energy and a chance to climb further in the standings, while the struggling Rockies continue to search for answers on both sides of the ball.
