SOURCE NFL: Steelers Sign DSteelers Sign Ex-Super Bowl DL, Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year

Posted on June 6, 2025

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have strengthened their defensive line, signing veteran Lawrence Guy—a true DEFENSIVE BEAST—to bolster their roster, sources told ESPN on May 18, 2025. The move comes as the team looks to enhance its defensive depth.

Guy, 34, joins the Steelers on a one-year, $2 million contract, a deal considered a steal for a player of his experience. The signing aligns with the team’s strategy of adding seasoned veterans on short-term contracts, per Spotrac.

The former Super Bowl champion expressed his desire to join Pittsburgh days ago on Good Morning Football, saying, “I’m a defensive guy, I need to go on defensive teams. I would do it, I would go to Pittsburgh.” His wish has now become reality. The Steelers needed a boost after losing Larry Ogunjobi to the Buffalo Bills in free agency, creating a gap in their defensive line rotation.

With Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and rookie Derrick Harmon anchoring the unit, Guy adds a reliable veteran presence, per The Athletic.Guy’s career stats are impressive: 557 tackles, 17 sacks, and 3 interceptions over 14 NFL seasons. A 2011 seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, he won Super Bowl LIII with the New England Patriots in 2018, anchoring a defense that held the Rams to just 3 points, per NFL.com.

His versatility as a run-stopper and pass-rusher fits seamlessly into Teryl Austin’s 3-4 scheme. Despite playing only 9 games with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2024 before his release, Guy recorded 18 tackles, proving he can still contribute, per Steelers Depot.

Fans on X are buzzing, with @Blitz_Burgh posting, “Guy’s a steal! Our D-line just got tougher!” Ian Rapoport noted, “This signing reinforces the Steelers’ defensive identity.” The team hasn’t won a playoff game in 7 years, with their latest loss to the Buffalo Bills (4-13) in 2024, per CBS Pittsburgh.

With $32 million in cap space, the Steelers can still pursue extensions like T.J. Watt’s projected $40 million per year. Guy’s addition alongside Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Minkah Fitzpatrick could propel the defense to new heights, potentially ending their playoff drought in 2025.
