Jaire Alexander has been cut by the Green Bay Packers, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
That is big news for Carolina.
“The Packers proposed a restructured contract that would have paid him less than the $16.15 million base salary he was due this season, and once Alexander turned that down, it was only a matter of time before he’d be released,” David Smith wrote.
“Once among the top cornerbacks in the NFL, Alexander has missed more games than he has played the last two years after dealing with a string of injuries.”
Injuries happen in the NFL, but it’s how you bounce back that determines your future. That didn’t stop the Panthers from resigning Jaycee Horn to a massive contract extension.
The Panthers have been in trade rumors for a corner all offseason long, including a few for the Miami Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey.
None of those deals makes any sense.
The Los Angeles Rams traded Ramsey for a third pick and got Hunter Long, who never panned out. Not to mention, the Miami Dolphins taking any of his guaranteed contract money in any trade, which muddles the chance for Ramsey.
Alexander would be getting to come home to Charlotte, as some of you may know, he is from there. He played High School football at Rocky River in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
The Panthers have been getting a lot of hype about being much better than they were last year, but they still have a lot of competition in their own division at wide receiver. Zach Roberts of SI.com said this about Carolina and the thought of adding Alexander.
“The Panthers face WRs like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Drake London, Darnell Mooney, Emeka Egbuka, Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and others twice a year. That doesn’t even include tight ends like Kyle Pitts. Having multiple good cornerbacks is always smart, and it’s fair to say that a Horn, Alexander, Jackson trio would be among the best in the league.“
Jaire would most likely come in and play a slot role and fill in at the weakest safety position. Which is exactly what Carolina needs right now.
Especially if they’re not going to make a deal for Trey Hendrickson, this would be the next best move for the Panthers to finish the amazing overhaul they’ve done this year.
