BREAKING NEWS: Doc Rivers Returns to Boston Celtics as Senior Coaching Staff Member – A Homecoming at TD Garden

BOSTON — A wave of excitement swept through TD Garden today as former Boston Celtics head coach and franchise legend Doc Rivers made a stunning return to the team — this time as part of the senior coaching staff. The announcement comes as the Celtics gear up for a new chapter following their triumphant 2025 NBA Finals victory.

Rivers, who famously led the Celtics to their 17th NBA Championship in 2008, returns to Boston with over two decades of coaching experience and a deep understanding of the franchise’s culture. Known for his powerful leadership, defensive philosophy, and ability to unite locker rooms, Rivers will serve as a Senior Basketball Advisor and Development Consultant under current head coach Joe Mazzulla.

TD Garden erupted as fans caught wind of the news, chanting “Doc! Doc! Doc!” during Tuesday’s open practice session. The Celtics organization confirmed Rivers’ return in a press release:

> “We are thrilled to welcome Doc Rivers back to the Celtics family. His championship legacy, elite basketball mind, and mentorship will be a tremendous asset to our coaching structure and player development initiatives.”

Rivers coached the Celtics from 2004 to 2013, compiling a 416–305 record, highlighted by multiple deep playoff runs. After stints with the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers — and most recently serving as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks — Rivers is back where it all began.

In a heartfelt statement, Rivers said,

> “Boston has always felt like home. This organization means everything to me. I’m honored to return and help the next generation of Celtics compete at the highest level.”

Fans, players, and former teammates expressed overwhelming joy across social media. Celtics star Jayson Tatum posted, “Welcome back, Coach! Let’s make more history.”

As the Celtics aim to build a dynasty, the return of Doc Rivers adds both wisdom and winning DNA to the bench — reigniting championship dreams in Boston.
