The New York Jets are entering their first season with a new head coach in Aaron Glenn, and have a quarterback change as well after they signed Justin Fields. The Jets have a talented roster with players like Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson, Quinnen Williams, Quincy Williams, and Sauce Gardner that with Fields now under center they should be set to compete for a playoff spot.
The issue is that the Jets are relying on Justin Fields to stay fully healthy despite being a dual-threat quarterback that will face extra hits than what would typically be necessary. Behind Fields, the quarterback room consists of Tyrod Taylor and Adrian Martinez.
If Justin Fields goes down at any point, the backup room isn’t a competitive on that can inspire much confidence. For a Jets team filled with the contending aspirations that they have, they need to look to add more quarterback depth, and they can do so by signing Colin Kaepernick.
The New York Jets Sign Colin Kaepernick
The New York Jets are in a spot where they luckily can add quarterback depth without having to go forward with a trade, and instead can sign Colin Kaepernick who is a free agent and looking to make an NFL comeback after being out of the league for the last eight years.
The last time Colin Kaepernick was on the field in 2016 he played in just 11 games where he had 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns with just four interceptions. Over his six years in the NFL, he accumulated 13,645 yards and 79 touchdowns, the biggest thing for Colin Kaepernick is showing that he can get back on the NFL field with no rust.
Recently Colin Kaepernick has been vocal about being ready, making sure through interviews and posts that it is known that he is still training and preparing to play in the NFL again. With that much time away from the NFL, though, it may be in Kaepernick’s best interest to take on a backup role.
Signing with the Jets as a backup would be ideal, as it would put him in a situation where he can get fully used to the NFL level again, while also having the chance to start if Fields misses time. It isn’t a starting role, but at this point, Colin Kaepernick will take whatever option is available to get back into the NFL in general.
