Dak Prescott’s new foe within the Cowboys, Joe Milton III, says something that Jerry Jones will find endearing.

Posted on April 9, 2025

In the grand theater that is the Dallas Cowboys, every offseason seems to come with a narrative twist fit for Hollywood. Whether it’s contract sagas, high-profile trades, or a glimpse into the often-mysterious mind of owner Jerry Jones, the Cowboys have mastered the art of staying in the national spotlight. The 2025 offseason is no exception. This time, the buzz centers around two quarterbacks: entrenched starter Dak Prescott and incoming rookie Joe Milton III, whose recent comments may just have added a compelling new layer to the ever-unfolding Cowboys quarterback drama.

Milton, the rocket-armed quarterback out of Tennessee, was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft—a move that raised eyebrows across the NFL landscape. Was it a developmental pick? A future project? Or a not-so-subtle warning shot in Prescott’s direction? Whatever the case, Milton has wasted no time in immersing himself in the Cowboy culture. And in a moment that may resonate deep within the heart of Jerry Jones, the rookie said something that could endear him to the billionaire owner in a way that Dak Prescott never quite managed.

“I Just Want to Win a Ring for Mr. Jones”

During a media availability session at The Star in Frisco, a week after the draft, Joe Milton III was asked about what he hoped to accomplish with the Cowboys. His answer wasn’t rehearsed. It wasn’t polished. It was, in a word, raw. And for Jerry Jones, it might have been music to his ears.

“I just want to win a ring for Mr. Jones,” Milton said, without a hint of hesitation. “The man’s done everything for this organization. Built the brand. Brought the legends here. Built the stadium. And he still hasn’t gotten what he deserves—a Super Bowl win in this era. That’s what I’m here for. To help make that happen. However I can.”

The quote spread quickly. ESPN ran it on their bottom line. Skip Bayless declared himself a Milton fan instantly. Stephen A. Smith raised an eyebrow, noting that “this young man just made the Cowboys’ front office perk up.”

But more importantly, it struck a chord with Jerry Jones, who was said to be watching the interview in his office with his signature tumbler of Johnnie Walker Blue Label in hand. According to sources close to the team, Jones was visibly moved by the comment.

“This young man gets it,” Jones reportedly said to a staffer. “He gets what this star means.”

The Contrast with Prescott

The irony of the situation cannot be overlooked. Dak Prescott, now entering his ninth season with the Cowboys, has never explicitly made it about Jones. His leadership has always been framed around the locker room, the fans, and the pursuit of excellence. He’s never been accused of lacking passion or professionalism, but his relationship with Jones has been, at times, businesslike and strained.

Prescott’s last contract negotiations turned into a long, dragged-out saga. There were rumblings of mistrust. A power struggle. Even moments where it seemed the two sides would part ways. While Prescott eventually got paid, the deal always seemed more transactional than emotional.

That’s where Milton’s statement matters. It wasn’t about stats, endorsements, or legacy. It was about Jerry. And in Dallas, that still means something.
