Heading into the season, the Chicago Cubs needed another impact bat. While their offense hasn’t been awful in the early games, it also hasn’t been particularly strong—something that isn’t too surprising. It’s still early, but relying on Jed Hoyer to assemble an above-average offensive team remains uncertain. Currently, the Cubs rank 23rd in batting average, 19th in on-base percentage, and 20th in slugging, highlighting their need for more firepower at the plate.
However, a significant addition may have to wait until the offseason when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could become available. The Cubs have been linked as a potential suitor if the Toronto Blue Jays let him walk. Yet, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Toronto appears to be working on a long-term extension to keep Guerrero.
“The Toronto Blue Jays continue to inch closer to signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a contract extension, likely a 14- or 15-year deal worth about $500 million, which will be crucial for Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro’s popularity in Toronto. The Blue Jays’ last postseason victory was in 2016, and this is the final year of Shapiro’s contract,” Nightengale reported.
Regardless of Guerrero’s availability, the Cubs’ top priority should be retaining Kyle Tucker. And even if they claim financial limitations, they should still aim to add another offensive piece next winter. Should Guerrero become available via free agency or trade, Chicago would be wise to explore the opportunity.
