SEALED: Chicago Cubs Pull-Off Major Move; Agree Deal to Sign David Robertson to a $22.3 Million Contract Deal to Strengthen Bullpen

Posted on April 11, 2025

In a move to bolster their bullpen, the Chicago Cubs have signed veteran reliever David Robertson to a one-year, $22.3 million deal. The signing comes as part of the Cubs’ effort to shore up their pitching staff in hopes of remaining competitive in the National League playoff race.

High-Leverage Reliever David Robertson Still a Free Agent - Where Will He Sign? - The Playoffs

Robertson, 38, is a seasoned veteran with over a decade of experience in Major League Baseball. Known for his high strikeout rates and ability to close games, he’s been one of the most reliable late-inning options in recent years. Over his career, Robertson has accumulated 137 saves and 689 strikeouts, with a career ERA of 3.41, and has played for several teams, including the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and most recently, the Chicago White Sox and Miami Marlins.

The Cubs’ bullpen has been a source of concern in recent seasons, and the addition of Robertson provides much-needed stability to a unit that has struggled to close out games. With closer roles often a high-pressure position, Robertson’s experience and leadership are expected to be crucial in guiding the Cubs’ young pitchers and offering a reliable option in late-game situations.

Robertson enjoyed a strong 2024 campaign, posting a 2.43 ERA and 12 saves between his time with the Marlins and White Sox. His performance demonstrated that he still has the ability to get key outs in critical situations, making him an attractive option for the Cubs as they look to compete in a competitive NL Central division.

Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins expressed excitement about the signing, stating that Robertson’s addition significantly strengthens their bullpen depth and provides a proven late-inning arm that can handle high-leverage situations. “David brings experience, composure, and a track record of success, which we believe will complement the other pieces in our bullpen,” said Hawkins.

The Cubs, who are aiming for a deep playoff run, have made significant strides in improving their roster this offseason, with Robertson’s signing being one of the most notable moves. As Chicago looks to reassert itself as a contender in the postseason, they will lean on the veteran leadership of Robertson to fortify their pitching staff.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on the Cubs’ bullpen to see if this move can provide the necessary late-game reliability that the team has lacked in recent years.
