The Chicago Cubs are reportedly among the teams interested in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. They have allegedly extended a “unique” four-year contract offer, resembling the deal Cody Bellinger signed with the team last offseason.
According to Matthew Trueblood of North Side Baseball, the Cubs have made a “creative, potentially unprecedented” contract offer to Alex Bregman. The proposed deal is reportedly worth around $30 million per year over four seasons and includes multiple opt-outs. Bregman may have the option to opt out after any of the first three seasons, making the contract structure similar to the one the Cubs gave Cody Bellinger—another client of agent Scott Boras—last February.
Bregman has been seeking a long-term contract this offseason but has yet to find the deal he wants after rejecting the Houston Astros’ offer. The Chicago Cubs, along with the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox, have emerged as potential landing spots for the star third baseman.
According to Matthew Trueblood, Cubs president Jed Hoyer is working within two budget constraints. The first is the known luxury tax threshold, set at $241 million for 2025, while the second is the internal budget determined by the Ricketts family.
Currently, the Cubs are about $40 million under the tax threshold, meaning their reported $30 million offer to Bregman would keep them below that limit. However, the final decision on spending ultimately rests with ownership.
Adding Bregman would be a major boost for the Cubs, who have already brought in two former Astros this offseason—Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly. As currently built, Chicago is a strong contender for the NL Central title in 2025, and signing Bregman, the top remaining free agent, would only enhance their championship aspirations.
