Good evening Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets renegotiated Allen Lazard’s contract. I am surprised at how many commentators seem to think this move has a substantial impact on the Jets’ draft plans. Under the new contract, Lazard can be cut or traded after June 1 with minimal consequences under the salary cap, so there is no assurance he will even be on the roster. In addition, and there’s no way to sugarcoat this, Lazard stinks. There is literally no aspect of his game, outside of possibly blocking, that he executes at even an NFL average level. He’s not a deep threat, he’s terrible at contested catches, his hands are among the worst I have ever seen, he’s slow, he has terrible lateral quickness, he’s not a good route runner, he’s big but he plays small. Maybe you can make the argument he blocks at an above average level. Maybe. When the best you can say about a receiver is that he doesn’t suck at blocking, well, he just isn’t a good receiver. Lazard just plain stinks. If his presence on the roster, assuming he even makes it to the opening day roster, in any way affects the Jets’ draft plans, then I would begin to question the abilities of the new Jets regime. Personally I think Lazard has zero impact on the Jets’ draft plans. At least I hope so.
