The Chicago Cubs are aiming for an NL Central title this season, and they currently have the strongest roster in the division on paper. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be active in the trade market come July. Patrick Mooney of The Athletic believes the Cubs will make a significant move at the trade deadline, potentially acquiring Sandy Alcántara.
Mooney predicts that the Cubs will finish just above 83 wins and claim the division title after trading for Alcántara in a major deal with the Miami Marlins.
While Mooney did not provide details about the potential trade, it’s expected to involve a substantial package. At the time of the trade, Alcántara will have 1 1/2 years left on his contract, followed by a club option for 2027.
The Marlins ace is earning $17.3 million this year and next, with a potential $21.2 million salary if the club option is exercised. Should the Cubs land Alcántara, he would become the leader of their rotation, with Colin Rea likely moving to the bullpen.
Alcántara looked sharp in his season debut for the Marlins, pitching 4 2/3 innings, striking out seven, walking four, and giving up two earned runs. Despite some struggles in the fifth inning, Alcántara showed his potential after missing last season due to Tommy John surgery. With Alcántara set to be a sought-after player at the deadline, the Cubs would be wise to pursue him aggressively.
