Chicago Cubs Could Land Another Trade Spot For Gold Glover Top Talent to New York Yankees

Posted on April 13, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have expressed interest in adding another starting pitcher this offseason, in addition to Matthew Boyd.

While they could explore the trade market for a potential acquisition, with Spring Training nearly underway, they might choose to wait until the trade deadline to make a move. While trades are possible during Spring Training, unless the Cubs receive an irresistible offer, waiting could be the better option.

MLB insider Robbie Hyde suggested a trade that would bring Clarke Schmidt of the New York Yankees to the Cubs. Schmidt posted a solid 2.85 ERA over 16 starts last season and would be a valuable addition to the team. However, Hyde’s proposed deal would involve sending Nico Hoerner to the Yankees.

Hyde noted, “He’s a guy with a high-contact bat… You could move Jazz Chisholm to third and plug Hoerner in at second base. He’d be a fantastic addition for the Yankees.” Hoerner, a Gold Glove-caliber infielder with good speed and a reliable bat, is exactly what the Yankees need.

With just one year remaining on his contract, the Cubs could risk losing him for nothing if they don’t trade him. While it’s not an urgent reason to trade him, it’s a factor worth considering.
