Chicago Cubs Could Land Another $108 Million Spot in Trade with Seattle Mariners For Top Prospect

Posted on April 14, 2025

The Seattle Mariners are reportedly open to trading starting pitcher Luis Castillo if it enhances their roster for a 2025 World Series push. Among the potential suitors, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer believes the Chicago Cubs could be the ideal landing spot for the $108 million pitcher.

Rymer has proposed an intriguing hypothetical trade where Castillo would join the Cubs, with the Mariners receiving outfielder Owen Caissie, the Cubs’ No. 2 prospect, in return.

Rymer noted that while the Cubs’ starting rotation is solid, it has lacked a sufficient swing-and-miss ability this season. Even in a down year, Castillo has remained in the 53rd percentile for whiff rate, making him a valuable addition to the Cubs’ staff.

With the Cubs’ farm system loaded with talent, Rymer believes the Mariners might even consider paying down some of Castillo’s remaining contract to acquire one of the top prospects.

Caissie, 22, is an MLB-ready outfielder with a career minor league OPS above .850, indicating he’s well-prepared for a major league role. His addition to the Mariners would provide immediate impact while contributing to the team’s future.

Meanwhile, the Cubs, who are gearing up for a strong 2025 season, could greatly benefit from adding Castillo to their rotation as they aim to compete for the National League Central title.
