The San Francisco surprisingly traded Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings this offseason. They could look to replace him with a familiar face from the AFC.
Mason had an expanded workload after Christian McCaffrey’s injuries derailed his season. He had 789 yards in 12 games before he too suffered an injury. However, with McCaffrey expected to return next season, Mason’s trade value was higher than it likely would have been next season. FanSided’s Nick San Miguel urged the 49ers to sign Jeff Wilson to replace Mason.
“Wilson, like Mason, signed as an undrafted free agent with San Francisco after no team selected him in the NFL Draft,” wrote San Miguel. “He went on to be a solid player for San Francisco, rushing for 1,733 yards and 15 touchdowns across five seasons with the 49ers. He was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2022 after the 49ers acquired McCaffrey, and he has been there with head coach Mike McDaniel ever since.”
Wilson is buried behind Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane on the Miami Dolphins depth chart and is unlikely to sign back with them as a free agent. The 49ers would only be able to offer him a backup spot as well, but with McCaffrey’s injury history and his familiarity with Shanahan, he could be a real asset.
He signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Dolphins in 2023. He had just 637 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 27 games with the team.
