Breaking: Mets Announce Decision on Cubs Key Player

Posted on April 15, 2025

The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon. With a 4-6 record in Spring Training, the Mets will have a day off on Wednesday before continuing their Grapefruit League schedule on Thursday against the Houston Astros.

After strengthening their lineup by signing left-handed power hitter Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million deal, the Mets face a setback with the loss of some key pitchers at the start of the season. They will begin the year without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, but the team is hopeful that their pitching depth will deliver quality innings. With several promising arms in camp, the Mets may have additional opportunities in the coming weeks.

One of the notable pitchers in New York’s Spring Training is former Chicago Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay. After a breakout season in 2023, where he was a standout in the bullpen for Chicago, Alzolay made a significant impact. The 6-foot-1 right-hander appeared in a career-high 58 games, recording a 160 ERA+ and striking out 67 batters over 64 innings.

However, last season didn’t go as smoothly for Alzolay. He was limited to just 18 appearances, posting a 4.67 ERA and giving up six home runs in 17.1 innings, which was more than he allowed in all of 2023. On Tuesday, Alzolay was among the Mets players reassigned to minor league camp.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024, Alzolay was hoping to remain with the Mets following his signing of a two-year, minor league contract with the team before Spring Training (via Will Sammon of The Athletic). While there may be another opportunity for the former Cubs star with New York, for now, he is heading to minor league camp.
