Tension is building in Boston following the Red Sox’s major signing of superstar free agent Alex Bregman, which strengthens their position in the American League. The assumption is that top prospect Kristian Campbell will take over second base while Bregman plays third base, his natural position.
This shift would move Rafael Devers to designated hitter, likely placing Masataka Yoshida on the trade block. However, Devers reportedly isn’t eager to accept the DH role, and if he refuses, it could derail Boston’s plans. Worse still, the veteran could force a trade as early as this offseason.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently speculated that the Chicago Cubs could be a possible destination for Devers if a major trade occurs. “Trading for Devers would firmly position the Cubs as NL contenders and could also convince Tucker to stay beyond 2025,” Kline wrote. “Chicago’s depth chart at third base is weak, but they have enough elite defenders to mitigate Devers’ fielding challenges.
Plus, a lineup featuring Devers and Tucker would become a major offensive threat, capable of going toe-to-toe with teams like Atlanta or Los Angeles.” If trade talks about Devers emerge, the Cubs are a strong contender.
Already in “win-now” mode with recent acquisitions like Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, Devers could be the missing piece, though it would come with a hefty price. With the financial resources and prospect depth to make the deal, the Cubs could realistically land Devers as a solid consolation after missing out on Bregman.
