Cubs And Dodgers Pulls Off Stunning Trade That Will Have Far Reaching Consequence

Posted on April 16, 2025

Ryan Brasier’s time with the Dodgers officially came to an end on Tuesday, as the veteran reliever was traded to the Chicago Cubs, just days after being designated for assignment.

The 37-year-old Brasier was DFA’d last week to free up space on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster for newly signed reliever Kirby Yates.

The Dodgers had reportedly been shopping Brasier before that decision, and ultimately found a trade partner in the Cubs.

Chicago acquired the eight-year veteran after a 2024 season in which Brasier posted a 3.54 ERA but missed significant time due to a calf injury.

In addition to Brasier, the Dodgers sent cash considerations to the Cubs to help cover some of the $4.5 million owed to Brasier this season. In exchange, the Dodgers will either receive a player to be named later or their own cash considerations.

During his two seasons with the Dodgers, Brasier had a 1.89 ERA, including a remarkable 0.70 ERA in 39 appearances in 2023, which led to a two-year extension. However, he became expendable in the bullpen following the Dodgers’ recent acquisitions of Yates and left-hander Tanner Scott.
