The Chicago Cubs have been busy this offseason, looking to bounce back from a disappointing season. From smaller changes to the acquisition of Kyle Tucker, they’ve made several moves. Earlier this week, the Cubs designated infielder Luis Vazquez for assignment.
Then, on Friday afternoon, they traded him to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash, as reported by Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune.
Luis Vazquez, 25, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The Puerto Rican infielder appeared in only 11 games for the Cubs in 2024, recording 12 at-bats and posting a disappointing .083/.143/.083 slash line, with six strikeouts.
Aside from a power surge in 2023, when he hit 20 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A, Vazquez hasn’t shown much pop in the minors. Over 1,887 minor league at-bats, he has a .240/.309/.360 line with 44 home runs, 214 RBIs, 458 strikeouts, and 162 walks.
Once considered a top 20 prospect in the Cubs’ system as recently as last year, Vazquez failed to meet expectations. He now joins the Orioles, where he’ll have a chance to prove himself at the major league level, though he’ll face tough competition with Baltimore’s young infield talent.
Despite his struggles, the Cubs managed to get something in return for him after designating him for assignment.
