A Receiver Who Can Take the Chiefs to the Top: Team Set to Trade for ‘Juicy’ Playmaker

Posted on April 18, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason plans will naturally center around fixing Patrick Mahomes’ protection, especially after the Super Bowl loss and trading away star guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears.

But there is another position that could be considered a little urgent to fix, and that’s at receiver.

Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy loom as Mahomes’ go-to guys with Juju Smith-Schuster, DeAndre Hopkins, and Marquise Brown all free agents, but the Chiefs don’t generally go big at the position.

But what if they did this offseason?

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has an interesting option for Kansas City, and it involves getting DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks.

“This would be juicy,” Barnwell writes. “With Travis Kelce dropping to last in ESPN’s Receiver Scores and additions such as Marquise Brown and DeAndre Hopkins failing to sustain their impact, the Chiefs were essentially down to rookie first-rounder Xavier Worthy as their only reliable receiver in the Super Bowl. You saw how that went.

“The forgotten man here is Rashee Rice, who injured his knee in October and missed the rest of the season. His presence would seem to render a Metcalf move unlikely. Rice and Worthy could be a dynamic one-two punch and would cost peanuts, given that they’re both on rookie deals for a couple more years.”

It is an interesting thought and Barnwell is right, the Chiefs might be content with a Rice/Worthy one-two punch next season.

Adding a player like Metcalf would be a game-changer in every sense, but as always, money will play a factor. Reports of DK wanting a contract at around $30 million APY, plus having to trade for him, make the move unlikely for the Chiefs.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to think about, and having Metcalf, Travis Kelce, Rice, and Worthy as your passing options might bring the gunslinger in Mahomes back to life.
