The Chicago Cubs have finalized the signing of former New York Mets slugger in a recent transaction.

Posted on April 18, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have been linked to New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso in the latest MLB rumors, as the team continues to search for a big move to strengthen its roster. The Cubs are reportedly considering Alonso, a power-hitting first baseman, although many see the New York Mets as the frontrunner to retain him. As one of the top options for first base, Alonso’s market remains relatively quiet this offseason. He has the potential to hit over 30 home runs and drive in 100-plus RBIs per season, and his on-base percentage is solid at .339 for his career. However, the Cubs face some challenges in acquiring him, especially considering the high cost Alonso is expected to command, with some reports indicating a potential contract worth $180 million over six years.

Pete Alonso is a proven offensive weapon, and his numbers reflect his ability to perform at a high level. In the 2024 season, he played in all 162 games, earning an All-Star selection while hitting 34 home runs and driving in 88 RBIs, though his slugging percentage and OPS saw a slight dip. Despite this, his career statistics are impressive, with a career batting average of .240, a .329 OBP, and a .459 slugging percentage. Alonso has already demonstrated his power, and his consistency over the years would make him a valuable addition to the Cubs.

However, the Cubs’ roster situation may not align with adding Alonso. The team currently has Michael Busch as their first baseman, and general manager Jed Hoyer has shown confidence in Busch’s abilities. Hoyer noted that Busch made significant strides defensively and sees him as a potential Gold Glove candidate. Busch, who was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has displayed impressive stats in his time with the Cubs, including 21 home runs and a .775 OPS in 152 games last season. His defense at first base was solid, with a .996 fielding percentage and five defensive runs saved.

Additionally, the Cubs have other pressing needs, such as power in the outfield. Players like Seiya Suzuki and Kyle Tucker are expected to step up, with Suzuki needing to increase his power numbers in the 2025 season. While Alonso would add tremendous power to the Cubs’ lineup, the team may be better off allocating its resources elsewhere, such as acquiring a top-tier starting pitcher or extending the contract of newly acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker. Given that the Cubs are already set at first base and the designated hitter role is also occupied by Suzuki, there’s limited space for Alonso, unless the Cubs make changes to their outfield or trade Suzuki.

In conclusion, while Pete Alonso would undoubtedly be a great addition to the Cubs, the financial commitment required to sign him could be better spent elsewhere. The Cubs are already investing in Michael Busch at first base and have other roster needs, particularly in starting pitching and power hitting. Therefore, signing Alonso, though appealing, may not be the most efficient use of the Cubs’ resources at this stage.
