Major-Setback: Cubs Trade $85 Million Slugger to Braves

Posted on April 18, 2025

There were offseason rumors suggesting that the Chicago Cubs might trade Seiya Suzuki. While nothing materialized during the winter, if the Cubs still wish to move on from him and his relatively costly contract, which runs through 2026, a trade could still be on the table.

Given the current struggles of the Atlanta Braves, Suzuki should be a top target for them if the Cubs are willing to part with him.

In the 2025 season, Suzuki has been playing outstanding baseball over 10 games, with a .256/.327/.581 slash line. He leads the league in strikeouts but boasts a 146 OPS+. According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, the Braves anticipate Ronald Acuña Jr. returning in May, but with Jurickson Profar’s suspension, they could use help in the outfield sooner.

Bowman noted, “The Braves added Fairchild knowing Profar would be suspended until June. For now, Fairchild, Kelenic, De La Cruz, and Harris will be the outfielders.” With Acuña expected back in May, Verdugo could become a potential option for the Braves.

As for the Cubs, they have little reason to trade Suzuki in the coming weeks. A deal closer to the trade deadline seems more likely.

However, if the Cubs maintain their strong start to the season (currently 7-4 and in first place in the NL Central), it would be difficult to justify trading their key three-hitter.

Still, with the Cubs’ recent emphasis on saving money, anything is possible, and the Braves would be the team that makes the most sense for him right now.
