One of the great unknowns of the NFL offseason has been solved.
The Philadelphia Eagles will visit the White House on April 28, to celebrate the franchises Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who announced the visit during a White House Press Briefing.
“I know there was a lot of fake news about an invitation that wasn’t sent or was sent,” Leavitt told reporters. “We want to correct the record: We sent an invitation. They enthusiastically accepted, and you will see them here on April 28.”
There had been some groundswell, as well as erroneous reporting immediately after Philadelphia won its second Lombardi Trophy, that the Eagles would boycott the visit and turn down the invitation from President Donald Trump.
The rumor sparked excitement from many progressive-leaning social media accounts, and liberals alike.
However, in reality, the team and the White House hadn’t finalized a date or the details surrounding a visit, which are both now official.
While many fans probably hoped that the Eagles would turn down the invitation, the franchise seemed intent on attending, all along.
“We would be honored to visit the White House,” an Eagles source told CNN last month. “It’s one of the things we had looked forward to doing and we look forward to receiving the invitation.”
The Eagles did not visit the White House in 2018, after beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, after President Trump declined to invite the team in the aftermath of several players silently protesting and advocating for social justice causes.
