In today’s NFL, $50 million a year has become the benchmark for quarterbacks. Earn more than that, and you’re considered a true franchise QB. Make less, and you’re seen as a transitional option—either because you’re aging or not elite.
Even though being a “bridge” quarterback still comes with a hefty paycheck—often around $40 million per season—it doesn’t offer the same long-term security. Bridge QBs constantly face the threat of being replaced by younger talent. Franchise QBs, on the other hand, enjoy stability and job security.
Given this, it’s easy to understand why Purdy and his camp might demand north of $50 million per year. But should the 49ers meet that price?
Absolutely not.
Purdy may believe he’s a franchise quarterback, but he hasn’t proven it yet. He ended last season poorly, losing five of his last six games and suffering two injuries. If he holds out for that kind of money, the 49ers should explore trading him.
Let another team make the mistake of overpaying, like the Cowboys did with Dak Prescott or the Dolphins with Tua Tagovailoa.
The 49ers don’t need to make the same error. Stay firm, San Francisco—and don’t be afraid to make the tough call.
