Yankees have signed Anthony Santander to fill the void left by Juan Soto’s departure

Posted on April 21, 2025

Replacing a player like Juan Soto is an immense challenge, but the New York Yankees are actively exploring strong alternatives to fill the void in their outfield. One prominent option is Anthony Santander, a power-hitting outfielder who had a standout 2024 season with the Baltimore Orioles.

According to Erik Boland of Newsday, the Yankees have shown significant interest in Santander, who also appears to be intrigued by the idea of joining the Bronx Bombers. Santander had a career year in 2024, smashing 44 home runs and driving in 102 runs while posting a personal-best .814 OPS (excluding the shortened 2020 season). Over eight seasons with Baltimore, the 30-year-old tallied 155 home runs and maintained a .776 OPS. His impressive performance earned him both an All-Star nod and a Silver Slugger award last season.

Santander’s potential addition to the Yankees lineup would bring much-needed balance and power. As a switch-hitter, he could slot seamlessly into the middle of a potent offense already anchored by AL MVP Aaron Judge and slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Though Santander has primarily played right field throughout his career, the Yankees could utilize him in left field, especially if Judge returns to his natural spot in right. Meanwhile, top prospect Jasson Dominguez is a strong contender to take over in center field, where he has more experience and comfort.

The Yankees’ pursuit of Santander is part of a broader effort to strengthen their roster. They have also been in talks with the Chicago Cubs regarding Cody Bellinger, a versatile first baseman and outfielder. As reported earlier by Yankees On SI, New York has considered including their No. 5 prospect, right-handed pitcher Will Warren, in a potential deal for Bellinger. However, financial disagreements between the Yankees and Cubs have reportedly stalled the negotiations.

If the Yankees fail to acquire Bellinger, their urgency to sign Santander—or possibly Teoscar Hernández—will increase significantly. Even if Bellinger ends up in pinstripes, the Yankees could use him primarily at first base while still bringing in Santander to bolster their outfield. Santander’s power, versatility, and postseason potential make him a prime candidate to help the Yankees stay competitive and chase their 28th World Series title.
